Information for Students at Campus Benjamin Franklin (CBF)

Here we provide information on internships (Praktisches Jahr, PJ) and clinical electives (Famulatur) in radiology at Charité‘s Campus Benjamin Franklin (CBF) and how you can apply.

You are here:

Internship in the Department of Radiology – Campus Benjamin Franklin

Radiology is a very exciting specialty and is uniquely interconnected with all other clinical departments in a hospital. Therefore, radiology offers medical students a special clinical experience and opportunity to interact with other specialties and get to know their diagnostic needs.
During an elective radiology rotation, interns will typically gain insights into the following areas of radiology:

  • Chest radiology
  • Skeletal radiology
  • Ultrasound
  • Computed tomography
  • Magnetic resonance imaging

On your first day, please come to the main office of our department at CBF (Chefsekretariat Prof. Dr. B. Hamm) at 9:00 am (first floor, elevators 19 and 20, room Nr. 1428). Our secretary, Ms Seifried, will help you with all practical matters (hospital attire, keys, etc.).  You will then be picked up by our internship coordinator for a tour of the department and to be assigned to your first rotation.

Morning Conferences and Teachings
Morning conferences take place at 8:00 am (Mondays through Fridays) in Demonstration Room II (behind the X-ray reception area). On Tuesdays, there is a teaching for residents after the morning conference. The sessions are also open to interns and students doing a clinical elective in our department.

Our regular hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Mondays to Fridays.

Self-Study Days and Absentee Policy
Interns are allowed one day per full 5-day week for self-study,  i.e., per week in which you are not absent for other reasons  (public holiday, vacation, sick leave). While self-study days can be taken flexibly, they should not be taken in a row and need to be pre-approved by your supervisor. If you are sick or absent for any other reason, please notify our office (Ms Seifried: silvia.seifried@charite.de). Planned absences should be announced to Ms Seifried in advance. During your one-year internship, you are permitted a total of 20 days of unplanned absences.  We are welcoming you and wish you an enjoyable and instructive internship in our department!
Prof. Dr. med. B. Hamm, Dr. Matthias Haas

Clinical Elective in the Department of Radiology – Campus Benjamin Franklin

Our department at Campus Benjamin Franklin offers the full range of imaging modalities including magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, (Doppler) ultrasound, angiography, conventional radiography, and fluoroscopy. You can observe all radiological examinations or get actively involved, for example, by writing reports or performing ultrasound examinations. Together with our internship coordinator, you can select one or several imaging areas for your clincial elective.

Our regular hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Mondays to Fridays, starting with a morning conference at 8:00 am (Demonstration Room II, behind the X-ray reception area). A weekly teaching for residents (as well as interns and students doing a clinical elective in our department) is held after the Tuesday morning conference.

If you are interested in a clinical elective in radiology at CBF, send an inquiry including an application letter (with the desired dates – minimum of 4 weeks) and your CV to our office (Ms Seifried: silvia.seifried@charite.de). We will answer as soon as possible. A radiology elective in our department will be recognized as a hospital elective by the German State Examination Offices.
We are looking forward to welcoming you.

Yours, Dr. Matthias Haas
Coordinator for Internships and Clinical Electives
