Information for Students at Campus Virchow-Klinikum (CVK)
Here we provide information on internships (Praktisches Jahr, PJ) and clinical electives (Famulatur) in radiology at Campus Virchow-Klinikum (CVK) and how you can apply.
To get an idea, you can also read the reports on the experiences of students who did an internship rotation or clinical elective in our department before. The reports are in German.

Internship in the Department of Radiology – Campus Virchow-Klinikum (CVK)
Dear Students,
Welcome to the Charité’s Department of Radiology at Campus Virchow-Klinikum (CVK).
Radiology is a wide-ranging specialty offering you many options for an elective rotation during your one-year internship (Praktisches Jahr, PJ) and interesting insights into the work of a radiologist. There are four main areas:
- Chest radiography
- Skeletal radiography
- Ultrasound (US)
- Computed tomography (CT)
Other rotations include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fluoroscopy, interventional radiology with outpatient and inpatient services (vascular and interstitial interventions with angiographic or CT guidance), and breast imaging.
Practical Issues and Teachings
Shortly before starting your rotation in our department, you will get an e-mail with important initial information from our office or our local internship organizer.
On your first day, please present to Ms Krenz, in the main office of our department at CVK (Chefsekretariat Prof. Dr. B. Hamm), at 8:30 am (Altes Röntgenhaus, Südstraße 3, first floor) for some paperwork and practical issues. You will get a coat, trousers, and casacs from the hospital, while you need to bring your own shoes and name badge. You will then be picked up by our internship organizer for a tour of the department and to be assigned to your first rotation.
Our weekday shifts are:
Monday through Thursday: 7:30 am – 4:30 pm
Friday: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm
In some areas (e.g., computed tomography), interns can work late shifts (2:00 – 10:00 pm).
Regular education sessions covering a range of radiological topics by different presenters take place on Tuesdays and can be attended by residents, interns, and students doing electives in our department (Library, Mittelallee 3, first floor or by video conference). A weekly radiology teaching for interns at all three campuses is held by Professor J.-W. Oestmann and Dr. Paul Jahnke on Wednesdays while Associate Professor Elke Zimermann offers an emergency radiology teaching starting at 8:15 am on Wednesdays (for details see „Teaching & Learning“).
These education sessions provide a good overview over the entire field of radiology and beyond. Attending them is highly recommended. Internal departmental sessions for physicians currently take place twice a week. They are dedicated to the presentation of interesting radiological cases or new scientific insights as well as projects of our department.
Self-Study Days and Absentee Policy
Interns are allowed one day per full 5-day week for self-study, i.e., per week in which you are not absent for other reasons (public holiday, vacation, sick leave). While self-study days can be taken flexibly, they should not be taken in a row and need to be pre-approved by your supervisor. It is your responsibility to keep track of your self-study days and make sure that you do not accumulate more days than allowed. If you are sick or absent for any other reason, please notify our main office (Ms Krenz). Planned absences should be announced in advance. During your one-year internship, you are permitted a total of 20 days of unplanned absences.
We are welcoming you and wish you an enjoyable and instructive internship in our department!
Yours,
Professor Bernd Hamm, Chair of the Department
Dr. med. Laura Segger, Coordinator for Internships and Clinical Electives
Clinical Elective in the Department of Radiology
Dear Students,
Interested in a clinical elective (Famulatur) in radiology at Campus Virchow-Klinikum of the Charité? We offer the full range of imaging modalities including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), (Doppler) ultrasound, angiography, conventional radiography, and fluoroscopy. You can observe all radiological examinations or get actively involved, for example, by writing reports or performing ultrasound examinations. Together with our internship organizer, you can select one or several imaging areas for your clincial elective. For a four-week clinical elective, we recommend that you focus on two imaging modalities.
Regular weekday shifts start at 7:30 am. There are several teachings and staff meetings on different days, which you are encouraged to attend to learn about the many facets of radiology (for details see „Practical Issues and Teachings“ above).
If you are interested in a clinical elective in radiology at Campus Virchow-Klinikum, please send an inquiry including an application letter (with the desired dates – minimum of 4 weeks) and your CV to our main office (Ms Krenz: ricarda.krenz@charite.de). Kindly include information on any previous experience in radiology and on any special interests or your desired focus. We will answer as soon as possible. A radiology elective in our department will be recognized as a hospital elective by the German State Examination Offices. Please ask us if you wish your elective to count as an outpatient elective.
We are looking forward to welcoming you.
Yours,
