Information for Students at Campus Charité Mitte (CCM)

It is worthwhile to get to know radiology by doing a clinical elective (Famulatur) or part of your internship (Praktisches Jahr, PJ) in our department – whether you want to be a radiologist or wish to specialize in another field of medicine.

Here you will find detailed information on internships and clinical electives in radiology at Campus Charité Mitte (CCM).

Get in touch!

You are here:

Internship in the Department of Radiology – Campus Charité Mitte

Doing part of your internship in radiology is a good and exciting choice. Radiologists see a wide and diverse range of diseases and interact with clinicians from nearly all specialties every day.  Radiology is also a fascinating option for those interested in physics and technical innovation.

Internship in Medical Imaging

During your four months in radiology, you will acquire sound basic skills in medical imaging for your future practice of medicine – either in radiology or another specialty. An internship in radiology typically consists of several four-week rotations through different imaging services.

At Campus Charité Mitte, core rotations are:

  • Chest and skelettal radiology
  • Computed tomography of surgical patients
  • Computed tomography and radiography of medical patients
  • Emergency radiology (computed tomography, radiography, and ultrasound) in ICU and ER patients

Elective rotations include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuroradiology.

Organizational Issues

If radiology is the first part of your internship, please present to Ms Einnahrs following the introductory session. Else, please see Ms Einnahrs at 10:00 am on the first day of your internship rotation in radiology.  You will find her in the main office of the Dept. of Radiology at the Charité’s central campus (Campus Charité Mitte, CCM). The office is located at Luisenstraße 10, 10117 Berlin (Floor 2, Room 023). From Ms Einnahrs, you will get the forms you need to get white coats from the laundry department and keys from the key service as well as information regarding your radiation protection briefing.

Weekday Shifts

Monday through Thursday: 7:30 am – 4:30 pm
Friday: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm

If you wish, you can also participate in late or night shifts.

Education

Scientific sessions with presentations on current research conducted by the different study groups in our department take place on Tuesdays at 7:45 am.

  • Tuesdays at 2:30 pm: Formal education sessions covering the entire field of radiology (see our Teaching Curriculum) for students and residents (via Skype).

Self-Study Days

Besides acquiring practical skills during your radiology rotation, you will have enough time for theory. Interns are allowed one day per full 5-day week for self-study, i.e., per week in which you are not absent for other reasons (public holiday, vacation, sick leave). Self-study days can be taken flexibly but should be pre-approved by the supervisor responsible for the service to which you are assigned in the preceding week.

Absentee Policy

If you are sick or absent for any other reason, please notify Ms Förster. During your one-year internship, you are permitted a total of 20 days of unplanned absences. Planned absences must be pre-approved.
Reports of former interns in our department (in German) are available at www.pj-ranking.de.

We are welcoming you and wish you an enjoyable and instructive internship in our department!

Yours,

Pro f. Dr. med. Bernd Hamm (Chair)
Dr. med. Sarah Maria Böker (Teaching Coordinator, CCM)
Dr. med. Laura Büttner (Coordinator for Internships and Clinical Electives)

Clinical Elective in the Department of Radiology – Campus Charité Mitte

Radiologists see a wide and diverse range of diseases and interact with clinicians from nearly all specialties every day.

Radiology is also a fascinating choice for those interested in physics and technical innovation.

Options during your clinical elective at Campus Charité Mitte depend on availability and include chest and skeletal radiology, computed tomography of surgical patients, radiography of medical patients, and emergency radiology. You will participate in patient examinations, image interpretation and reporting, and discussions of findings with the responsible senior physician.

Application

Interested in a clinical elective in radiology? Send an application with your CV to Ms Förster (gabriele.foerster@charite.de). Your application should include the following information: home university, matriculation number, term of your studies, start and end dates of your elective in our department (minimum of four weeks) and your phone number. We will answer as soon as possible. If you do not study in Berlin, you need a certificate from your home university. A radiology elective in our department will be recognized as a hospital elective by the German State Examination Offices.
